Our Mandate

The Friends of Point Pelee was established in 1981. It was one of the first charitable, not-for-profit, volunteer and staff based organization formed to assist a National Park in Canada.

In partnership with Point Pelee National Park, the Friends of Point Pelee support and raise funds through memberships, donations, and retail sales. We also provide volunteer support to assist in the protection and to promote the ecological integrity of this Lake Erie peninsula for present and future generations to come. We achieve our purpose by focusing on three specific areas; educational support through messaging, services and literature, as well as scientific research, and ecological restoration/management.

Education
  • Develop and publish books in our Point Pelee Nature Series, including the Woodland Nature Trail Guide , Butterflies of Point Pelee National Park , Trees of Point Pelee National Park , Warblers of Ontario , Sparrows & Finches of Ontario.
  • Host guided birding hikes during the Festival of Birds in May.
  • Update and expand exhibits in the Visitor's Centre and Marsh Boardwalk.
  • Contribute to construction of the Red Cedar Savanna Discovery Walk.
Research
  • Fund research on Species at Risk in the park, most recently including the Impact of Raccoon Predation on Turtle Species, and the successful reintroduction of the Southern Flying Squirrel.
